Bates numbering assigns a unique, sequential identifier to every page of a document set — the standard way legal and records teams track pages across discovery or evidence production. A typical Bates number looks like a short prefix followed by a zero-padded number, such as ABC000001.
Supported files and limitations
- Standard, unencrypted PDFs within the memory available to your browser. Large or complex documents may fail to load or process.
- Password-protected PDFs are not supported — remove the password first with the Protect & Unlock PDF tool.
- The stamp is placed at a fixed position and does not avoid existing page content.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. Numbering happens locally in your browser. Your file and tool inputs are not uploaded. Page assets and limited usage events still use the network.
What's the difference between page numbers and Bates numbering?
Page numbers typically restart or describe position within a document (like "3 of 20"). Bates numbers are a continuous, unique identifier across an entire page set, used for legal tracking and citation.
Can I continue numbering from a previous document?
Yes — set the starting number to continue any sequence, which is common when Bates-numbering multiple files as one production set.
Does the output have a watermark?
No. Only the page numbers or Bates numbers you configure are added — nothing else.
Can I customize the page number format?
Yes. The default is "{n} of {total}", but you can enter any template using those two placeholders — for example just "{n}" for a bare number.
